Linguistics is a crucial part of family life

Linguistics is a crucial part of family life

People wanting some parental advice should encourage their children to hone their linguistic skills, according to one expert, who said increasingly that is what employers are looking for.

John Coe, general secretary of the National Association for Primary Education, said that by supporting children with language problems, the UK will help to drastically improve their lives.

"It is a worry because modern education and modern industry does demand high linguistic skills and so what might not have mattered 50 years ago matters increasingly today," he stated.

The expert added that improving children's communication skills is not just a task for schools and parents should start to take more responsibility.

Wider society is also affected by illiteracy, according to Mr Coe, which makes the need to solve the problem even more pressing.

According to a survey by Booked Up, 60 per cent of children like to share a book with their parents or carers as it shows that they like to spend time with them.
