Many fathers are not unaware of their entitlements and benefits when it comes to their paternal rights to help care for children, an organisation has claimed.
Rob Williams, chief executive for the Fatherhood Institute, welcomed a government campaign to raise awareness of dads' rights and what working options they have.
The expert said that many fathers do not even realise that their employer offers paid paternity leave and those who are aware do not know the notice period for these benefits.
"If you are a man, and you are expecting your first child, it is [up] to you to go and find out what is available," he added.
Mr Williams said that there are various ways for fathers to ask for leave entitlements, advising that they go online and use the directgov.co.uk website to check.
Fathers are entitled to a statutory two week's paternity leave which can be paid at 90 per cent of wages or a flat £123.06 per week.
