Parents should make sure that their children are aware of the dangers of posting pictures online, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre has warned.
According to the organisation, young people need to be taught how to use technology safely, especially when using a mobile phone.
A spokeswoman for the firm said: "Parents need to be aware of what is going on as well so they can educate their children in the best possible way."
She added that many children do not realise that images which are posted online can be shared, copied and used elsewhere.
However, her parental advice is for adults to learn more about the use of technology so they can pass it on to their children, as she said there has always been a gap in knowledge.
"It's really about empowering young people to know what the risks are, to take appropriate precautions," she stated.
Her comments follow an independent review into the sexualisation of young people, conducted by psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos, which advised that the Advertising Standards Agency should take steps to avoid the problem.
