Expert: School careers information needed as well as parental advice

A good schools career service should bolster parental advice on what children can do with their future, an expert has recommended.

Margaret Dane, chief executive of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, said that the recession has made it even more important for kids to be given sound advice on their options.

"Young people are faced with many difficulties in thinking about and planning for their futures," she added, saying that young people should be given information early on "to help them make the best choices for their future".

The expert stated that many people going into higher education have had little or no careers advice, with it being assumed that bright children can work it out for themselves.

Ms Dane's advice follows comments from professional membership body the Institute of Career Guidance, which said that careers education in schools is "patchy and inconsistent", meaning young people are not prepared for the labour market.
