Family travel budgets 'can be stretched by haggling'

People looking for their next family travel experience should not be worried about haggling over the cost of the break or what is included, as more holidaymakers are doing so, according to an expert.

Sharron Livingston, editor at thetravelmagazine.net, said that everyone wants to eke out their budget as much as possible and people are not as embarrassed about bargaining as before.

She added that "these days, hotels are willing to negotiate", while recommending Thailand, Turkey and Iceland as good value-for-money destinations.

Offering tips for stretching the family travel budget, Ms Livingston said cruises are a good bet on value for money, claiming that if people book ahead they can get a bargain, as the price rises as capacity fills.

"Though prices haven't come down too much, the cruise companies have added value such as on board credits, free flights and even free excursions," she stated.

Luxury breaks may now be affordable on some family travel budgets, as holiday firm Hayes & Jarvis said that five-star resorts are discounting heavily, offering good savings.
