Not returning faulty goods 'costs family finances £5,000'

Fear of returning faulty goods to retailers could be leaving a £5,000 hole in family finances, the government has claimed.

A survey carried out by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills showed that the average person loses out on £4,950 over their lifetime because they do not return items to shops.

The poll found that 48 per cent of people have at least one faulty product in their home which they wish they had taken back for a refund or exchange, while 32 per cent are sitting on five or more unwanted items.

Consumer minister Kevin Brennan said: "We want to do all we can to encourage people not to lose out financially because they don't know their rights. Now is the time to brush up on your consumer rights."

The poll, which was conducted as part of the Know Your Consumer Rights campaign, also showed that 36 per cent of people feel nervous when returning goods to stores, 21 per cent are struck by embarrassment and 19 per cent feel intimidated.

Last month, the government launched a new campaign to protect consumers from internet and email scams set up by criminals and rogue traders.

More about family finances.
