Those using vitamins and health supplements to boost family health could find that the products are useless if stored incorrectly.
Research from Dr Lisa Mauer, an associate professor of food science at Purdue University in Indiana, found the pills can degrade within a few days if they are stored in humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.
The study showed that supplements such as vitamin B and C are vulnerable to a process known as deliquescence, which causes them to break down when exposed to high levels of humidity and can disappear entirely from the pills in as little as a week.
"Opening and closing a package will change the atmosphere in it. If you open and close a package in a bathroom, you add a little bit of humidity and moisture each time," Dr Mauer commented.
She added that health supplements do not become harmful if they have degraded but are rendered ineffective - making them useless for improving family health.
Last month, Denise Armstrong, lifestyle manager for Heart Research UK, said that vitamin D is important for heart health and recommended people follow a sensible diet and expose themselves to sunlight.
More about family health.
