EU laws could protect consumers

New EU legislation could help to protect consumers when buying products abroad and give them more confidence, according to an expert.

A spokesperson for the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said that proposed EU laws regarding the provision of food information to consumers will help to improve protection for them.

"It will make it clearer and give consumers more reassurance and confidence that the claims which have been made actually do what they say they do and can be backed by good science," he stated.

The new legislation could also interest people concerned with healthy family recipes as they will be able to trust the labelling put onto food products as by law companies will have to back up claims with scientific research.

According to the BBC, some health claims made by food manufacturers may vanish due to a European regulation which demands that companies come up with the scientific evidence to back their labelling.
