The introduction of plus-size clothing line for obese children could get in the way of family health and normalise the weight condition, according to an expert.
Dr Andrew Buist, deputy chairman of the BMA's Scottish General Practitioners Committee said that the bigger ranges for children could undermine the efforts of doctors and teachers trying to get the obesity message across.
"Creating plus-size clothing for children does go some way to normalising this. It is essential that children are given the tools to manage their weight, eat healthily and take more exercise," he stated.
The doctor added that educating children in school about the dangers of obesity is essential and will go a long way to help solve the growing problem in the UK.
Marks & Spencer has launched the plus-size range and the retailer said that it was meeting consumer demand by launching a range suitable for larger schoolchildren.
