Parental advice: Many UK grandparents providing free childcare

A new study has found that grandparents are providing free children to their family, and in turn saving them thousands of pounds, which could interest those considering parental advice on childcare.

The RIAS 'Summer Holiday Helpers' study revealed that 60 per cent of the 12.5 million over 50s grandparents across the UK are providing free children for their grandchildren and half of these have admitted that the duties increase during school holiday periods.

These arrangements between families are saving parents thousands of pounds a year, which in total could amount to £1.9 billion in childcare costs a year.

Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, said: "As working hours get longer and the impact of previous years' economic turmoil hangs over us, it looks as though parents are relying on grandparents more than ever before, especially over the long summer holiday break".

Parental advice was offering recently with regards to price comparison website, with Rhonda Carrier, head of content at Takethefamily.com, stating that they are not geared to a family's travel needs.
