Family life: Working mothers do not harm their children

A new study has found that mothers going back to work after giving birth does not have an impact on either family life or their children.

The research, which was conducted by Columbia University and assessed more than 1,000 children, has overturned previous claims that this may have an effect on a child's mental and social development.

Factors such as family life, household income, reading ability and family relationships were assessed and children whose mothers worked were found to be likely to benefit from higher-quality childcare amongst other benefits.

Jane Waldfogel, professor of social work at the university, who co-authored the study, said previous studies were not looking at the bigger picture, but solely focusing on the mother leaving the home.

"But in reality, lots of other things change the minute she goes out to work, including the quality of childcare, the mother's mental health, the relationships within the family and the household income," she said.

Families were recently told of the benefits of teaching their children at home, with Rachel Foster from Mumsnet, stating that it can be fun and informative for both the parent and child.

More about family life.
