Parents looking to improve their family health have been told that the best way to ensure their children stay fit and active is to engage them in fun activities.
Elaine Sawetz, a fitness and obesity consultant, explained that active children are less likely to develop diabetes or other diseases in later life and are more likely to join in and enjoy themselves.
"As well as the obvious benefits of getting out in the fresh air, playing outside develops skills such as hand-eye coordination, gives confidence and promotes sociable, fun behaviour," she added.
Ms Sawetz went on to suggest to parents that they think of more unusual ways to engage their child, for example, chasing a rope along the ground can make a child fitter and make them laugh too.
The comments follow a survey commissioned by Crealy Great Adventure Parks which found that more than a quarter of children who lived in urban areas spent at least three hours each day actively running around outside, compared to just a fifth of those in the countryside.
