Classes of 20 are the ideal size for primary school teachers according to an industry expert, offering parental advice.
Christine Blower, general secretary for the National Union of Teachers (NUT), the largest teachers' union, explained that she believes it is not acceptable that primary class sizes in the UK remain amongst the highest in Europe.
"The NUT has for a number of years called for class sizes to be limited to a maximum of 20 pupils by 2020 to improve the academic achievement of pupils and give teachers a better work/life balance," she explained.
Her comments follow the publication of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development annual report Education at a Glance, which reveals primary school class sizes in the UK average 25.7 pupils per class – the highest in Europe.
Ms Blower went on to say that smaller class sizes mean teachers have more time for each child which leads to more motivated and better educated children.
