Dedicated to my mother who has Vascular Dementia
So much and for so long
You gave me so freely
Brought me into this world
And showed me the way
How to step up and branch out
To know right from wrong
You sang me my very first memorable song
Showed me with patience how to draw
Tended my cuts when they were sore
Took me to exciting new places
And so I grew
You were my role model
Never selfish with money
Not materialistic it was there to enjoy
We haven't always had it easy
Not always seeing things eye to eye
Funny how life can change things
And how roles can be reversed
It's a part of a process and sadly cannot be rehearsed
Gradually I noticed changes
You seemed to be slipping away
Simple signs that something wasn't right
I'm glad I took time to notice
For we had a bigger battle, together we would fight
Just like it was when I was little
Only now I will get you through
Thanks for all you did for me mum
I am returning it with love from me to you

"A lovely poem, and one that many can relate to. For me it was my father who became the child. The father who had always been physically strong, who had the knowledge and the time to answer any of my questions as I grew up. He was a great role model to us and our children. I now have memories of two fathers, the strong one and the vulnerable one, and I loved them both."
