Guilty pleasures don't come much guiltier than our
passion for Z-list celebs, says TV's body language and
behaviour expert Judi James. But judging from the tabloid
headlines, it seems we still can't get enough...
With the impending demise of Big Brother and the car crash
lifestyles of Kerry Katona, Amy Winehouse, Jordan and Peter Andre,
it's easy to believe that the cult of celebrity obsession has
flatlined, and we're finally ready for a return to front-page
politics and quality TV drama. But like it or loathe it, I believe
our microscopic interest in all celebs, especially FFBFs (famous
for being famous) is neither new, nor on its uppers.
Far from being a sign of a culture in freefall, what our fascination really reveals is our own feelings of elevated status and self-esteem. While previous generations were fed a diet of air-brushed 'stars' that were placed on a pedestal, with the current crop of FFBFs there's no hero-worship involved. In Big Brother, the ones that fascinate us most are the ones we love to hate. They know they're as disposable as Kleenex and we watch them to vote out the ones that we find most irritating, not just to keep in the ones we love.
