It's time to
buy British again, says chef, author and TV presenter Clarissa
Dickson Wright. Here she explains why keeping it local is better
not only for our country and our farmers, but also for
ourselves.
For the last 22 years, ever since I emerged from the gin bottle,
I've been a passionate supporter of British farmers and a
committed advocate of British food. We now have popular
farmers' markets, shops and independent producers selling
online.
Unfortunately, on coming to power 13 years ago, the Labour
Government threatened to do to
the farmers what the
Conservatives did to the miners - and tried to turn our working
countryside into a theme park. Britain began to import a huge
proportion of its food from other countries - many of which
use unsafe food production methods and all involving
thousands of food miles and gallons of fuel, not to mention plenty
of road congestion.
However, the interest in greener living, and - perhaps more
importantly to the Government - rising fuel costs, has finally led
us to realise that, as a country, we need to be more
self-sufficient. And that is something we are more than capable of
doing.
