Journalist and
broadcaster Lauren Booth has come to the conclusion that we need to
take a step back from a world obsessed by how people look.
There's a telly programme, that's been my
guilty pleasure. The kind of show you watch when the kids are
tucked up in bed - and the husband is beyond tutting distance.
Snog, Marry, Avoid? plays on every prejudice concerning the
'yoof' trends of today. Namely, that female clubbers dress
like underage lap dancers and their boyfriends use so much hair gel
that accidental exposure to sunlight runs the risk of spontaneous
combustion.
Each week a highly glossed, parade of what my gran would have
called "dogs' dinners" are stood in front of a
malicious computer voice called 'Pod' who mocks them into
having a radical 'makeunder'. The producers would have us
believe that the shows raison d'être is to prove that
beneath each high street tan lies 'a natural beauty'. What
it's really doing is turning the tables on young women who leer
at the middle aged mums who used to be humiliated by Trinny and
Susannah. This type of TV is all about girl-on-girl emotional
violence - and it's got to stop.
