We're constantly bombarded with health messages about the importance of a good diet, yet we're eating more than ever. Lowri Turner, TV presenter and nutritionist, says it's time to be honest with ourselves
What did you have for
breakfast this morning? Was it a bowl of spelt cereal, with a
sprinkling of organic blueberries and a light dusting of sunflower
seeds? No, of course it wasn't. It was probably
a piece
of toast, or a latte and a muffin grabbed on the way to work, like
everyone else.
We live in an age where we are surrounded by information about
eating healthily. Most high streets have
a whole food store
and supermarkets all sell a range of healthy options. Schools now
advertise their 'healthy' status and woe betide if you
throw a packet of crisps in your kid's lunch box. TV shows,
books, Government guidelines and even Jamie Oliver
are all
pushing the health message.
So, with all this focus on what
we should eat, why are we
getting fatter? In the last three years, 24 per cent of UK adults
were classified as overweight or obese, compared to 15 per cent in
1993. Over the same period, the percentage of overweight children
rose from 11 to 16 per cent. Recently, I went to a college in South
Wales. They were displaying pictures of their Prom Night. Not a
single teen could be described as slim.
