5 tips for healthier hair
Tired of limp, lifeless locks? Follow these simple tips from our fashion editor Justine Brennan for frizz-free, fabulous hair
Don’t towel dry your hair
Hair is much more fragile when it’s wet, so aggressive towel drying can cause breakage to the hair and a frizzy or fluffy outcome once it has dried. Instead of towel rubbing the towel across the hair, gently blot the ends of the hair to remove any excess moisture.
Eat your greens
Supplements such as hair, skin and nail vitamins certainly enhance the health of your hair, but the solution to your hair hitches could be as simple as getting the right nutrients from your food. Iron, Zinc, Omega-3 and Vitamin A are all essential nutrients for hair health – all of which can be found in dark leafy vegetables. Kale, spinach, Swiss chard and broccoli are all excellent sources of vitamins and minerals for the hair.
Don’t wash your hair every day
Although you might think you’re doing yourself a favour by washing your hair every day, you’re actually stripping too many of your natural oils – leaving hair limp, lifeless and dehydrated. Invest in some good dry shampoo and try washing your hair every other day or, if you’re lucky, twice a week to retain its natural moisture and shine.
Protect your hair from the sun’s rays
It’s been drilled into us how important it is to protect our skin from UV rays, but what about our hair? Too much sun exposure can lead to dry, brittle hair, faded colour and lots of frizzy, split ends. Shield your hair by wearing a hat, or washing with UV protected shampoos and conditioners.
Use a hair mask
Wearing a hair mask for as little as 15 minutes can do wonders for tired tresses. Hair masks have a deep-cleansing and conditioning effect, which encourages softness, shine and overall strength of your hair. They’re easily accessible, but it’s just as easy to whip up your own mask if you want to save pennies!
Olive oil, lemon juice and avocado are great ingredients for a DIY mask for all hair types – simply mix together, smother all over your hair and leave for 15-20 minutes.
