10 April is Sibling Day. Here are some of our favourite famous siblings who proved that talent runs in the family …
Warren Beatty and Shirley McLaine
Superstar siblings Warren Beatty, 78, and Shirley McLaine, 80, have been in the public eye since the 1950s, picking up their share of awards – including an Oscar each – for their prolific careers both in front of and behind the lens. Their roles have included parts in Bonnie and Clyde and Dick Tracy for Warren, and The Apartment and Terms of Endearment for Shirley.
Joan Cusack and John Cusack
American actors Joan and John grew up in Illinois alongside their siblings Ann, Bill and Susie, who have also dabbled in acting. Some of Joan’s most notable acting jobs include her roles in TV series Shameless and 80s’ movie Working Girl, while John is best known for roles in movies Being John Malkovich, High Fidelity and Say Anything.
American music group The Osmonds consisted of brothers Alan, Wayne, Merril, Jay, Donny and Jimmy, who first achieved chart success in the 70s with hits including One Bad Apple, Double Lovin’ and Puppy Love, and went on to sell 102 million records across the world. Older brothers Virl and Tom, who were born deaf but learnt how to play instruments, would also occasionally accompany their siblings, while only sister Marie launched her own successful singing career in 1973.
Rob Lowe and Chad Lowe
While older brother Rob may have found more success in movies and TV – starring in American TV series Parks and Recreation, Californication, Brothers and Sisters, and The West Wing – Emmy Award winner, and Hilary Swank’s ex-husband, Chad, has enjoyed recurring roles in many TV shows including ER and 24, and currently has a regular role on hit teen show Pretty Little Liars.
Luke and Owen Wilson
Floppy-haired brothers Luke, 43, and Owen, 46, have made a name for themselves in Hollywood, playing many a romantic lead in hit movies including Legally Blonde and My Super Ex-Girlfriend (Luke) and Wedding Crashers; You, Me and Dupree; and Marley & Me (Owen). What you may not know is the siblings have an older brother, Andrew, who is also an actor and director – albeit in much smaller acting roles.
Zooey and Emily Deschanel
Stunning sisters Emily, 38, and Zooey, 35, grew up in Los Angeles with their showbiz parents; cinematographer father Caleb and actress mother Mary Jo. Zooey has carved out a successful TV and film career, with starring roles in 500 Days of Summer, Elf and New Girl, while Emily has held down a regular role in TV series Bones since 2005.
Emma and Alex Watson
While his career may have yet to hit the heights of that of big sis Emma, 22-year-old Alex Watson, who first appeared as an extra on Harry Potter alongside his sister, has been busy establishing a career for himself as a model, and has also starred alongside Emma in a big Burberry Campaign. Emma, meanwhile (who looks uncannily like her younger brother!) has followed her success on Harry Potter with roles in Noah, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and My Week With Marilyn, alongside her own modelling work.
Kate and Oliver Hudson
While Kate’s name may be the more recognisable in this acting duo, as the star of romantic comedies Bride Wars, My Best Friend’s Girl and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, older brother Oliver – fellow child of actress Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson – has carved out a successful career in TV, with regular roles in a number of series including Rules of Engagement and, more recently, Nashville.
Joseph and Ralph Fiennes
English actors Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes and Joseph Alberic Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes – or Ralph and Joseph as they are known to their friends! – both attended prestigious acting schools, with Joseph completing three years at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Ralph training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Since then, the brothers have bagged numerous roles on screen and on stage, with Ralph taking on notable roles in Schindler’s List and Harry Potter, and Joseph starring in Stealing Beauty and Shakespeare in Love.
Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal
Quirky siblings Maggie and Jake have an eclectic range of titles in their acting portfolios, with indie hits The Good Girl (Jake), Sherrybaby (Maggie) and Donnie Darko (Jake) nestled alongside blockbusters Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Jake) and The Dark Knight (Maggie). The acting pair are notoriously close, often posing together on red carpets and arriving at awards ceremonies arm in arm.
