Christmas trip packing tips
If you’re one of the thousands of people who will be driving home for Christmas this year, follow our tips to ensure your journey goes as smoothly as possible
- Make a list
Put your mind at ease before you go make a clear list of what you need to take/pack. Avoid that panic feeling of ‘What have I forgotten’ on the day! Keep this list by your bed ready for if you remember something just as you’re falling asleep!
- Lay it all out
Before you even start loading up the car lay out what you have to go in. Ask yourself: What will we need access to? What won’t we need out until you get there? Is there anything breakable/soft that should go on top? Will it all fit? If you think not act now and remove any excess not needed.
- Pack smart
You may not have thought about it but pack heavier bags in the centre of the boot when possible. Don’t pile items too high so that you cannot see out of the rear window. When you are packing your actual bag be smart. Pack pyjamas on top if they are what the children will need at your destination. Don’t forget toothbrushes and toothpaste too!
- Don’t forget entertainment
Remember travelling at this time of year means there is a high chance of traffic. Audio books for the journey (for kids and adults) is a great way to pass the time on long journeys. And if you are taking games consoles etc make sure they are fully charged before you leave.
- Keep them comfortable
Comfy kids are happy kids so pack the kids a pillow, and even a light blanket – if they are comfortable then your journey is more likely to be! Also keep a mop-up cloth and baby wipes to hand in case of spillages and a plastic bag for any rubbish.
- Be safe
Before you set off don’t forget to:
– Check the air in your tyres
– Is your spare in good condition?
– Have you got your breakdown service details/number to hand just in case?
– Put a first aid kit in your car
– Take your jump leads and a torch
– Pack plenty of water and snacks too
