Research has proven that triglycerides, fatty substances from food, may act on the same reward circuit in the brain that is involved in drug addiction – causing cravings that are impossible to resist. The work was done on mice, but the results showed a strong link between fluctuations in triglyceride concentration and brain reward development, and the researchers say their findings could help doctors understand the causes of both compulsive behaviours and obesity.
