134812517Kids who skip meals are more likely to become overweight, according to a Finnish study. And, with their excess body fat, comes an increased cardiometabolic risk – even as young as six to eight years old. The reason? These children were not going hungry – instead they were replacing main meals with sugary snacks and drinks. “Sticking to regular meals seems to be crucial for preventing overweight and cardiometabolic diseases – but parents also need to provide their children with better dietary choices: regular-fat vegetable-oil margarines and vegetable oils instead of low-fat margarines, fat-free milk and water instead of sugary drinks, and more fish instead of red meat at meals,” says Aino-Maija Eloranta of the University of Eastern Finland.
