5 minutes with Diarmuid Gavin
Diarmuid Gavin, best known for the 90s’ makeover series Homefront in the Garden and horticultural household favourite Gardeners’ World – not to mention Splash!, Celebrity Come Dine with Me and 71° North – took some time out to chat to Candis
What would your perfect day be?
I would be free of work for the day and wake up in Doonbeg in County Clare. I’d grab a surfboard and some waves with my daughter Eppie before heading for some pancakes in a seaside cafe. Then it would be a family walk with our dogs and meeting friends for dinner.
What did you want to be when you’re younger?
I knew from about 18 years old that I wanted to be a gardener. Before that I wanted to be a potter or any job working with LEGO would have been my seventh heaven.
What is your proudest moment to date?
Definitely when Eppie was born – it was just amazing – and aside from that I’d say winning a Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show.
What are you reading, watching and listening to at the moment?
I’m forever reading gardening books and articles – I’m a real stickler for research. I’m watching Breaking Bad, which is awfully addictive, and listening to an American podcast called The Moth – where people tell their life stories – it’s fascinating.
Can you sum yourself up in three words?
Mad, creative and complicated.
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Sinead O’Connor – who lives just down the road, Daniel Day-Lewis – another neighbour and Julia Roberts.
Who most inspires you?
My daughter – and preparing her for life. Having a child is a constant source of amazement and surpasses anything that has happened before.
What would you like to be better at?
What super power would you like?
To be invisible – I’d sneak on to first class planes and travel the world.
