Get festive with felt
These heart and star decorations look great hanging on the tree or looped from a garland on the banister
You will need:
❅ Red and white felt
❅ Pins, contrasting embroidery thread, and embroidery needle
❅ Pearl buttons ❅ 15cm ribbon
❅ Polyester batting (wadding) for the filling
How to make them:
1 Draw your chosen shape on to felt and cut out two shapes for each decoration you are going to make. Draw the snowflake shape on to the front of one of the shapes with a soft pencil. Work the embroidery using long and short running stitch on the front of your felt decoration, following the design shown on the template.
2 Sew on one or two pearl buttons, depending on the design you’ve chosen. (In order to save some time, you could stick the buttons on using a hot glue gun.)
3 Pin the shapes wrong-sides together and begin to blanket stitch the edges using the embroidery thread. Use small stitches, spaced around 5mm apart.
4 Cut a length of narrow ribbon, approximately 10cm long, to make the loop. Fold the ribbon in half and place the ends between the two layers of felt. Continue to work the blanket stitch all around the shape, leaving a 5cm opening for the filling. Push the filling in to the opening – you may find it easier to use the end of a pencil to do this. Sew up the opening using the blanket stitch to finish.
