Happy birthday Facebook!

This week marks the birthday of Facebook, which was originally launched on 4 February 2004 as thefacebook.com. To celebrate, here are some facts and stats about the popular social media site…


  • Facebook has a whopping 1.35 billion users who log on at least once a month, with 864 million of us checking our accounts every day!
  • The average user spends 17 minutes browsing the site each day.
  • One in four women have deliberately posted unflattering photos of their friends wearing bikinis online, and two fifths post photos of their friends without make-up.
  • 88 per cent of people use Facebook to stalk their exes and 31 per cent post photos to deliberately try and make them jealous.
  • 20% of Brits are motivated to get in shape by unflattering Facebook photos.
  • Half of all Facebook users have more than 200 friends.
  • 25 per cent of employers have rejected job candidates after looking at their Facebook page.
  • One in 10 UK pets have their own Facebook page! One cute puppy, Boo, is particularly famous on Facebook, with over 17 million likes.
  • The world’s oldest Facebook user turned 107 last month! Edythe Kirchmaier, from Ohio, US, initially joined Facebook to promote the work of charity Direct Relief, and now has more than 47,000 friends.
