Hope for new colitis treatment

Symptoms of the inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, might in future be reversed with a drug currently used to treat leukaemia. Colitis causes severe discomfort and weight loss following hard to treat flare-ups of diarrhoea and sufferers are at increased risk of bowel cancer. But University of Alberta medical researchers are excited about results found in tests on mice using the leukaemia drug imatinib (Glivec) and hope to move to clinical trials within five years.
