Knitting needles at the ready

It’s National Knitting Week and we’ve a round-up of some of the best events that celebrate this woolly wonder

469829775National Knitting Week is the chance for knitters and crocheters to get together and celebrate the craft while inspiring the next generation of yarn youths! First started in 2005, this special week has plenty of events for you to get busy with your needles and hooks. And it’s not all just baby clothes and jumpers – try creating flowers, cakes, animals, bags and bunting. Or get together with friends and have a go at yarnbombing – wrapping street furniture (or your own) in colourful knits.

Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland

On Saturday, the knitting group Woolly Wednesday will be celebrating the town’s heritage – yarn brands Patons had a factory there – with a trail of yarnbombing leading from the town centre to Resonate Arts House, where there will be knitting, coffee and cakes between noon and 3pm.

The Yarn Café, Earlsdon, Coventry

An open day on Saturday will feature lots of knitting demonstrations including knitting machines, looms and even arm knitting! There will be a weavers workshop plus other handmade items and tea and scones.

Kelly House, Lifton, Devon

For all things fibre, enjoy the Woolly Weekend this Saturday and Sunday, which plays host to exhibitors from around the south-west, from specialist producers of the finest woollen yarn to felt makers. Great for picking up Christmas presents and the event is raising money for the Children’s Hospice – South West.

Blackpool, Lancashire

Keep your eyes open for some woolly beasties hidden around the seaside resort as part of the Blackpool Yarnbomb Trail, including a cow, rabbits, a snake and a unicorn!
