Enjoy a decadent stay at Lumley Castle Hotel, County Durham
If you’re planning a short break away and fancy something a little bit different, we recommend a visit to Lumley Castle. This unique four-star hotel in the heart of County Durham is over 600 years old and overlooks the beautiful River Wear.
Accommodation at Lumley is of the highest standard with Courtyard and Castle double rooms and singles. For the ultimate luxury, book a stay in The King James Suite located in the main castle building with it’s impressive four poster Queen Anne Bed, reception room and fantastic views of the countryside. In keeping with the castle’s stylish setting, the Courtyard rooms are elaborately furnished and extremely welcoming. Beds are very comfortable, ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep and the well-stocked bathrooms have a regal touch with everything you need to enjoy your stay. There are generous tea and coffee making facilities and a nice touch is that you can enjoy your cuppa outside sitting at the bistro tables in the pretty courtyard.
Dining at the award-winning Black Knight Restaurant is a treat to behold. The décor and grand furnishings have a medieval and plush feel, with ambient lighting and beautifully set tables. Guests can choose from the a la carte menu offering delicious mains such as Lumley’s signature dish – beef fillet wrapped in Parma ham and stuffed with blue cheese – or the duo of venison with parsley root purèe, heritage baby carrots and juniper jus. There’s also an extensive grill menu and a delectable array of desserts. Our favourite was the Darjeeling crème caramel with roasted plums, biscotti and lemon cream – just heavenly! The wine cellars at Lumley are filled with an eclectic selection of the finest wines and Champagnes to complement your food choices. And if you’re passing through or are local to the area, it’s certainly worth booking for Sunday lunch to enjoy a lavish roast or afternoon tea.
There are regular events and theme nights on offer including Elizabethan banquets, where you’re invited to an evening of feasting with a five-course meal, wine and goblets of mead. Throughout the meal you’ll be entertained with songs and sketches before dancing the night away in the dungeons!
Budding super sleuths will love Motive for Murder evenings – your crime-solving abilities will be tested to the full as you attempt to solve the 70s murder of Lord Marcus Lumley, the castle’s aristocratic owner. The evening includes a reception drink, delicious three-course meal and all the fun of the murder mystery performance.
The next Motive for Murder evening is on 8 December and then Friday 22 January 2016. Prices are from £35 a head and booking in advance is recommended.
