Nuts about Brazils

Candis health editor, Karen Evennett shares the latest health update…

528439449Brazil nuts are not just for Christmas. They’re the richest source of selenium, and new research gives us even more reason to eat them daily – as higher levels of selenium are now associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer, according to a study in the International Journal of Cancer. The Newcastle University study also points out that in Europe (where colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death) we have much lower levels of selenium in our blood than people living in Canada and USA. Dietary sources (Brazil nuts and also shellfish, red meat and offal) are the best way to obtain selenium, the researchers say, because too much of the mineral can be toxic – with some studies suggesting that 200mg daily could increase your risk of diabetes.
