Pancreatitis risk

Candis health editor, Karen Evennett shares the latest health update…

pancreasPancreatitis (sudden inflammation of the pancreas) is a potentially serious condition that can be caused by medications widely used to treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Now researchers have discovered why some people develop this very nasty reaction (which can occasionally be fatal) – it’s all down to our genes. Those with two copies of a certain marker gene are four times more likely to develop pancreatitis when they take these drugs. According to the University of Exeter Medical School, 17 per cent of patients are affected by this gene, so the next step is for scientists to develop a test to identify at-risk patients before they start on medication that could do more harm than good.
