prostateMore and more men who believe they have low-risk prostate cancer are opting for “active surveillance” with regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests, digital rectal examinations and ultrasound scans to check whether their tumours are growing. But new research suggests that many presumed low-risk tumours may be more aggressive than they seem – and that’s because conventional biopsies fail to pick up the full extent of the cancer. Instead, researchers at UCLA are trialling a new image-guided targeted biopsy, which has so far shown that more than a third of men have more aggressive cancers than they believe.
