GettyImages_522020073Taking iron supplements that you don’t need can cause the metal to build up in tissues, potentially reaching toxic levels linked to neurological diseases like Parkinson’s. It’s long been thought that iron accumulation happens as a result of the ageing process – but new research suggests it could be the other way round and that an iron build-up speeds up ageing. If you think you may need iron supplements, ask your GP for a ferritin blood test to check on your iron storage before your start self-medicating.
