Sniffing out cancer…

Candis health editor, Karen Evennett shares the latest health update…

465261863Scientists have discovered a novel way of detecting cancer cells – by getting fruit flies to sniff them out. The researchers, from the Universities of Konstanz and La Sapienza in Rome, say that not only could the flies distinguish between healthy cells and cancer cells, but also subgroups within the cancer cells – for example different types of breast cancer. Dogs are already known to detect cancer by smell, however the research with fruit flies looks more likely to lead to a new cheap, fast and highly efficient way to screen for cancer long before it shows up on present diagnostic imaging techniques.
