save_a_life_join_the_registry_bone_marrow_donor_magnet-p147118528663617468envtl_400If you’re a blood donor – or are thinking about becoming one – have you also considered becoming a bone marrow donor? Anyone aged 18 to 49 who gives blood can join the bone marrow register. If you opt to do so, an extra sample of blood will be taken to identify your tissue type for the register – and you will then receive a call if a tissue match is found. Seven out of ten patients needing a bone marrow transplant will need a donation from a matched volunteer donor, identified through The British Bone Marrow Registry (BBMR) because only 30 per cent find matches within their family.
