Tried and Tested – Electric Blankets
Dreamland 16312 Double Bed Single Control Luxurious Heated Mattress Protector £88, amazon.co.uk
This may be on the more expensive side, but as it doubles as both mattress protector and electric blanket, it works out as good value. It fits the bed well and is quilted, which adds extra comfort. The control detaches from the blanket so it can be left on over the summer and it can also be machine-washed and tumble-dried. It took a little while for our tester to figure out how to operate it as it has lots of options including all-night use to ultra-fast preheat. Once understood, it was relatively straightforward to use and the fast five-minute preheat button does exactly what it says – one press and by the time you’ve brushed your teeth, the bed is toasty. There is also a temperature sensor, which responds to your body heat so that you never get too hot.
Lakeland Luxury Fleece Fitted Electric Blanket – Double £89.99, lakeland.co.uk
This underblanket is simple to put on the bed and has a fitted skirt to keep it in place. It covered our tester’s deep double mattress easily, but might be a stretch for those with extra-deep mattresses. Being fleece, it is extremely soft and comfortable. There are controls for each side of the bed, which allow you to heat them separately and which worked well. The speedy preheat button does what it says and gets your bed up to 37°C in ten minutes. There are six different heat settings, allowing just a warm glow to extra toasty when it gets really cold. It also has a foot-warming setting. There is a timer function too, where you can choose to keep it on from one to nine hours, and after the selected time it will automatically switch off.
Morphy Richards Double Washable Heated Underblanket £19.99, morphyrichards.co.uk
It took about ten minutes for this to be fixed to the bed, with a fitted sheet on top. It doesn’t cover the whole of a regular double bed, but enough, we felt, to heat both sides. It has one control and four heat settings, from low to high, with extra heat at the foot of the bed. The blanket heats up quickly and you can turn it down to an ambient temperature once you get in. We did find the control lead a bit on the short side, and tricky to get to, especially with a fitted sheet in place, but overall it’s a great blanket for the price.
Best dual control
Homefront Premium Fleece Electric Blanket – Double£64.95, amazon.co.uk
With its fluffy fleece finish, generous deep elasticated skirt to secure to your mattress and a host of features, it’s no wonder this won a Which?Best Buy award. We found the illuminated dual controllers with their nine heat settings (for feet and body on both sides of the bed) and ten timer options (from one hour to all night) easy to use and liked the fact that the lights go off once set so there’s no glare in your room at night. The wires are unobtrusive and although you need two sockets as both controllers need to be plugged in, they don’t get in the way like with some makes. All blankets are CE-certified and compliant to EU and UK standards with an automatic overheat safety shut-off for peace of mind. Comfortable, warm, safe and affordable – it’s a winner for us.
