Tried and Tested – Face Masks

Forget slippery sachets with creams that squirt out everywhere – the humble face mask has moved on, with a material or gel mask that can deliver targeted help with the minimum of fuss or mess. We put dozens through their paces to find the best for each category.

BEST AGE-DEFYING – Boots No7 Lift & Luminate Triple Action Serum Boost Sheet Mask £15 for 4 masks

A newish addition to the renowned No7 range from Boots, this is a good-sized mask which loops over your ears to stop it slipping off and has enough material to cover your neck. You leave it on for 15-20 minutes and mature skin really does feel moisturised yet tightened. It has a gorgeous scent and it’s relaxing to use. Once time is up, you just peel off and dispose of it, patting in any remaining product. Great value too.

BEST ORGANIC – Orgaid Greek Yogurt & Nourishing Organic Sheet Mask £8.45,

With the gentlest of certified organic ingredients including in the mask’s fabric, this is suitable for the most sensitive skin types. Our tester had recently had chemo and radiotherapy and this mask smoothed her dry skin with no irritation or side effects. A light, yoghurt-scented mask with no nasties, and which left skin supple and soft.

BEST BUDGET – Garnier Skin Active Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask £3 from Boots, Superdrug and major supermarkets

This mask was generously saturated in serum so you may find it a little messy to use – or spread the excess on to your neck and décolletage area. It has a nicely cooling effect on dry skin and most of our testers found it did exactly what it promised. However, all removed the residue and then applied their normal moisturiser. One tester had a light reaction so we would suggest you try a patch test of the serum first.

BEST FOR DRY SKIN – Skin Republic Gold Hydrogel Face Mask Sheet £7 from Beauty Naturals

This anti-ageing mask apparently contains gold particles to boost blood flow and slow collagen depletion to help to prevent sagging and stimulate cellular growth. The gel-like formulation is infused into the mask, which is big enough for all face shapes. On mature, tired skin, our testers found it really refreshed, plumped and energised skin, leaving it hydrated and with a healthy glow that lasted a few days.

BEST DRY MASK – Swiss Clinic Dry Face Mask £29,

Despite having no liquid or gel, these impregnated sheets are dry to the touch yet still contain the active ingredients to smooth lines and hydrate skin. The mask includes handy ear loops so you can position it correctly. Then, you gently massage the mask over your face, before relaxing for 15 minutes. The results were comparable to other, wetter products – smoother fine lines and a healthy-looking glow – and lasted up to eight hours. They are expensive but one mask can be used three times or more.
