Tried and Tested – hot cloth cleansers
BEST UNISEX PRODUCT
Merumaya Melting Cleansing Balm £18.50, 100ml (cloths sold separately £14.50 for 7), John Lewis, merumaya.com
Our tester loved the texture of this soft melting balm with sweet almond oil and found it easily took all her make-up off in one go without leaving a residue. Although the application instructions said to apply twice she did not find this necessary. It is also suitable for men and can be used as a cleanser and a shaving cream, too. The squeezable tube was very hygienic to use and you can either use the cloth to remove or just water. Skin felt instantly softer and testers found it quick, easy and effective to use.
Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm £43, 105g jar
This comes with one flannel-type cloth and a superb spa fragrance. You only need a small amount – about half a teaspoon – of this waxy balm to massage into skin before removing. The balm massages in easily without pulling the skin and cleanses effectively. Although it says it’s not for eyes, our testers found it worked really well at removing eye make-up while wiping with the hot cloth without any irritations. Skin was left feeling dewy and clean and, as you don’t need a lot, the jar lasts around four to six months.
Lacura Hot Cloth Cleanser £3.99, 100ml, Aldi
Lightweight and clean smelling, this cream cleanser went on very easily. The handy pump dispenser ensured it was easy to use and no wastage. As effective as other more expensive brands, although some testers remarked it was a little runnier and felt less rich than other cleansers, however, its cleaning power was still excellent. Includes one muslin cloth. One downside noted is that it can sell out in Aldi and therefore isn’t always in stock.
Pai Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser £30, 100ml, John Lewis, naturisimo.com
We loved this light cream that is a delight to apply. It comes in a nice stable bottle with a handy pump action dispenser. The scent is subtle and absolutely without nasties to irritate sensitive skin. Although not an oil or a balm, this cream left skin feeling very clean and soft without any tightness other facial washes might leave. The high-quality cloth is muslin on one side, flannel on the other, which cleans very effectively and does not irritate sensitive skin. Results are noticeable in a short time.
Botanicals Nourish Cleanse Melt £26, 60g, (cloths sold separately, £4 each), botanicals.co.uk
With its heavenly rose and camellia scent – all ingredients are certified organic – and gorgeous vintage-looking dark jar, this is a product worth showing off. Not a large pot compared to others but the dense, waxy balm goes a long way. Once warmed a little in your hands, it really does melt into skin. The waxy texture comes off easily with the lovely cloth. Skin felt plump, soft and soothed after application.
BEST FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Soap & Glory The Ultimelt Deep Purifying Hot Cloth Cleanser £10, 100ml, Boots
This good value cleanser is paraben free and includes invigorating essential oils and cocoa butter and almond oils along with pro vitamins, it has a lovely quality as it easily squeezes from the tube. It also comes with a single large cloth. Our tester, who has extremely sensitive skin, loved this as she had no reaction at all and it left her skin very soft. Highly recommended.
BEST MULTI USE
ESPA Optimal Skin ProCleanser £32, 100ml, espaskincare.com
This three-in-one product – cleanser, exfoliator and mask – can be used as a mask by leaving on for 15 mins, and can be removed without a cloth if you are in a rush as just water does the trick. We tested it as a hot-cloth cleanser and would endorse its exfoliating claims. It smells divine and expensive, like a spa in tube, and includes pumpkin enzymes, moringa seed extract and jojoba that really leave the skin glowing. Easy to apply and works in quickly. We found it to be gentle on skin and incredibly effective. Does not come with a cloth.
BEST FOR ALL SKIN TYPES
Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser £16.50 including 2 cloths, 100ml, John Lewis, uklizearle.com
This award-winning cleanser was one of the first on the market, and is still very popular coming in large and travel sizes. We tested a recent Limited Edition with Lavender and Vetiver, £23.50 for a 150ml tube, which comes with a muslin cloth and in a lovely tin. It massages into the face really easily and quickly, and is easily removed with the cloth. Skin feels scrupulously clean but supple and well hydrated. This particular one is quite calming in its scent and feel. Worthy of its many awards, it is simple and easy to use; suitable for all skin types.
