Tried and Tested – Leg and foot cooling

Whether you’re pregnant, have circulation issues, are on your feet a lot or flying long haul, heavy, swollen legs and feet during summer are no fun. Thankfully there are plenty of products that can help to soothe the discomfort and keep you cool.

Best range

Body Shop Peppermint, from £6.50

With foot scrubs, cooling sprays, lotions and rubs, this uber-minty range uses peppermint from Norfolk to give hot, achy legs and feet speedy relief. Use each individually or in combination to give your legs and feet a real lift. The Reviving Pumice Foot Scrub, followed by the Cooling Foot Lotion and topped up with the Cooling Foot Spray throughout the day, got the thumbs up from our NHS nurse testers, who felt these products did help to alleviate swelling on a 12-hour shift.

Best Moisturising

ESPA Cooling Body Moisturiser, £35 (200ml)

This light cream-gel body moisturiser instantly hydrates, refreshes and soothes the skin to leave it feeling revitalised and replenished. Aloe and Ayurvedic boerhavia gently soothe; hyaluronic acid and sunflower concentrate provide long-lasting moisturisation, while cooling menthol complex refreshes the skin. Not as minty as other products but not as drying, either, so would suit dry, mature skins. And our pregnant tester loved it. It also works as an aftersun to cool sun-heated skin.

Best travel product

Nelsons Arnicare cooling gel, £5.40 (30g) Boots, Holland & Barrett, pharmacies nationwide

This is designed to be massaged into overheated, overworked legs and feet to cool and revive, and we liked the addition of arnica to alleviate swelling. The grapefruit oil and menthol provided the cooling aspect and we loved that it was non-sticky to apply and came in a handbag-friendly size. As it is a gel, it can be drying, so those with dry skin may need to add moisturiser.

Best balm

Aaahhh! Soothing Balm for Aching Feet & Limbs, £20 (150ml)

Gorgeously scented, this light gel balm has a revitalising minty, Mediterranean scent and glides over swollen skin to refresh and cool tired limbs and stimulate circulation. Works brilliantly to calm sweaty feet, and the delicate spa scent makes a change from more overpowering products.

Best budget

Foot Works Cooling Crackle Mousse with Aloe, £2.50 (150ml)

Spray this cooling, invisible mousse directly on to hot, puffy skin for instant crackle – a bit like popping candy. The sensation is slightly weird, but extremely cooling as the bubbles fizz on your skin, helping to cool you down. Wait a few seconds, then rub it in. Aloe helps to calm irritated skin and is antibacterial to control excess sweat too. A bargain price for a fun product.

Best foot balm

Welda foot balm, £9.95 (75ml) Hollad & Barrett

Made with 100 per cent natural ingredients, this balm is designed to refresh tired feet, strengthen skin to prevent blisters, and help counteract excessive perspiration. Regular application helps to keep the skin feeling comfortable, firm and velvety smooth. It’s quite thick to apply although it does absorb easily, but also leaves a light film to help keep on top of perspiration. Astringent myrrh extract and soothing calendula extract care for the skin on the bottom of the feet and soften rough calluses particularly on the heels and soles. Kaolin maintains a dry and comfortable environment for the feet while organic olive oil keeps the skin feeling smooth. Aromatic lavender, rosemary and citrus scented essential oils help to deodorise and refresh the skin. We absolutely loved it.
