This month’s beauty secret: Pumpkin
Take a lead from beauty experts and celebrities – apparently Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan – and make the most of the beauty benefits. Pumpkins are packed with essential vitamins A and D, which help promote hydrated, youthful skin.
Scrub up well!
To revitalise dull, dry skin try this: mix equal amounts of brown sugar and pumpkin purée to form a grainy consistency. Apply to damp skin while in the shower and exfoliate.
To make the purée: Peel away the pumpkin skin, de-seed and cut into chunks. Add to boiling water and leave for approximately 20 minutes. Drain and mash.
Store the scrub in the fridge in a sealable container. This lovely concoction keeps for around four days.
Pumpkin pie face
If you are a fan of face masks, get seasonal and make the most of the pumpkin’s skin-saving antioxidants. To make four masks, mix together around 600ml of pumpkin purée, four tablespoons of yoghurt, 80ml of ground almonds, four teaspoons of honey and a dash of olive oil. Apply to damp, clean skin. Wash off with warm water after 10-15 minutes.
Halloween healthy hair hack
Mix one tablespoon of pumpkin seed oil with 80ml of coconut oil and 80ml of jojoba oil then add five drops each of eucalyptus, peppermint and lavender essential oils. Slather over clean, damp hair, let sit for several minutes then rinse. This works especially well on dry, damaged hair.
Beauty isn’t just skin deep…
Pumpkins are high in zinc and potassium, which boost the immune system and can lower blood pressure. They are also packed with the antioxidant beta-carotene, which, some studies suggest, may help prevent cancer. Start your day with a nutritious pumpkin spice smoothie. In a blender, add one apple, three carrots, pumpkin purée, a glass of water and one or two teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Blend until smooth. Add ice if preferred.
These tips were provided by the charity World Vision, which is encouraging people to ‘Carve a Heart’ in their pumpkin instead of a scary face this Halloween, as a symbol of hope for children living in fear.
