3 ways to head off Type 2 diabetes
Health Editor Karen Evennett offers easy ways to feel better…
1. Lose weight – you’re at increased risk if you’re overweight with a large waistline (31.5 inches if you’re a woman, 37 inches if you’re a man or 35 inches if you’re a south-Asian man), but for every kilo you lose you can cut your risk by up to 15 per cent.
2. Talk to your GP – having had any of the following conditions will raise your risk: hypertension, heart attack, stroke, polycystic ovaries, gestational diabetes, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or depression. You’re also at greater risk if you are a woman who’s given birth to a baby weighing 10lb or more.
3. Recognise the symptoms – extreme thirst, needing to use to toilet more often (especially at night), frequent bouts of thrush or genital itching, and extreme tiredness, blurred vision and slow wound healing are all signs of diabetes that can come on gradually but must be taken seriously.
