Back to school
Our money blog helps you save on essentials and finds the savviest bargains each week…
Save money on lunches
Gearing yourself up for the first mega food shop of the season? Give yourself a few extra minutes and compare prices through mysupermarket.co.uk It’s not as tricky as it looks and with a little judicious shopping you could send your kids to school with a packed lunch of lobster-filled bridge rolls, a homemade blueberry smoothie and a cut-price Twinkie for three days for the price of three supermarket cheese and pickle sandwiches. (Whether they’d thank you for it is another question…)
Save money on school uniforms and shoes
Department stores and supermarkets are scrambling to offer the cheapest deals on school uniforms. Some offers have ended but last-minute Lucys can still save at Debenhams, Matalan, John Lewis and Asda.
Save money on sportswear and equipment
The World Athletics Championships have got us all in the mood to move more, but don’t leave your armchair for the trainer shop without checking what discounts are available. Sports Direct always has deals, Argos is currently offering 70 per cent discounts on sports and fitness equipment and Runners Need is also having a 50 per cent sale, but be quick!
Save money on childcare
Childcare vouchers were to have been replaced by the tax-free childcare scheme this autumn but the change has been delayed until 2017. This is good news for employed parents who aren’t eligible for working tax credit. Did you know you can use childcare vouchers for extra-curricular music and sports lessons as well as traditional childcare? Find out more here.
Brush up your Shakespeare
Don’t get left out in the cold this winter – if Cumberbatch fever has taught us nothing else, it’s that you have to get in quick to snap up the best tickets. If you have children preparing for GCSE and A-level English, or even if you haven’t, get them to sign up for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre’s key scheme, which enables those aged between 15-25 to get tickets for £5.
