Consumer advice: More info needed on 'green' products

People looking for consumer advice need to have greater access to information from companies about the eco-friendly credentials of their products.

Will Hodson from Ethical Consumer Magazine said that getting the right information is crucial if consumers are to remain green with their purchases.

“It’s tempting to believe the latest glossy advert and think you’re buying green, but you’re probably not. We need hard figures from companies, comparable with those of their rivals,” he stated.

The ethical expert added that regarding issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, consumers are largely reliant on companies to provide accurate information.

He also believes that by making ethical choices consumers can influence the government’s approach to ethical products and eco-friendly procedures by showing them they want change.

The shopping comparison website Kelkoo recently predicted that sales of environmentally friendly products will more than double from £8.04 billion to £17.1 billion by 2015.
