Over-55s ‘more stylish than ever’

Over-55s 'more stylish than ever'

People over the age of 55 are apparently more stylish than ever.

This is music to my ears. I’m 53 and like to think I’m pretty trendy – especially as my daughter is never out of my wardrobe when she comes round!

A study from isme.com found that a third of young women now look to older celebrities for their fashion inspiration, rather than ladies their own age.

I guess this makes sense, as older women tend to have perfected their styles and prefer classic looks that they know suit them rather than trying to follow trends and getting them wrong.

Apparently personalities such as Helen Mirren and Joanna Lumley, both 66 years old, and 63-year-old singer Lulu are far more fashionable than 21-year-old Amy Childs and X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos.

This is hardly surprising as they’re all beautiful ladies and look far younger than their years, making them ideal style icons – for me at least!

A spokesperson from the retailer, said that because mature women “have lived through decades of changing fashion” they have more refined tastes.

Other top rated over-55s included Twiggy, Felicity Kendall, Judi Dench, Lynda Bellingham, Jo Wood, Anna Ford and Arlene Philips.

The study also highlighted the fact that age is no barrier to fashion, with 57 per cent admitting that they regularly wore sexy lingerie, compared to only 44 per cent of those half their age.

No types of clothing were show to be off limits, with parkas, combat trousers and little black dresses all enjoyed by over-55s.

However, I’m glad to read that mini skirts were out of favour with over-55s.

I’m not saying that no woman in her 50s or older can get away with wearing one, I just think this is something best left to the under-30s.

But that’s just my opinion. What do you think of over-55s who dress like this?
