Salt reduction can help ease cardiovascular risk

People coming up with healthy family recipes should make sure they reduce the amount of salt which they put into their meals, according to one expert who said it could cut the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases.

Sian Porter, a dietician and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, said that most people are unaware that most foods consumed already contain the recommended amount of salt.

“There is very good evidence that reducing salt intake can reduce the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases, particularly strokes and high blood pressure,” she said.

Ms Porter added that more needs to be done to educate people about the amount of salt they are consuming, which could interest those trying to create healthy family recipes.

The British Medical Journal recently claimed that the majority of the world’s adult population have an average daily salt intake which is higher than six grams.
