I always get itchy feet at this time of year, but how can I decide whether to extend what we have or up sticks and move to a bigger place?
Apply the location, location, location rule. If you love where you are but need extra space, do the maths. Building costs, within reason, are static, but house prices are not. So the more expensive the area the more value, in relative terms, you get for your extensions. In rough terms an extension costs between £75 and £150 a square foot according to mybuilder.com. Then compare this with what it’ll cost you to move – the average is £9,500 according to zoopla.co.uk.
