Fatima July 2012When I was a child I always wanted to be…

An athlete of course! I remember watching the 1980 Moscow Olympics thinking, “I want to be there someday.” Sport was the only thing I was any good at so there was no fallback plan.

My school days were…

Tormented! I was a bit of an outsider and never really integrated with the other kids. The only time when I was happy in school was when I was doing sport. Academically, I was fairly good but as I spent much of my early years in children’s homes, I was somewhat emotionally disturbed, so found it really difficult to concentrate.

My proudest moment was…

Giving birth to my son. It was my ultimate life experience. Working hard towards being World Champion was very special, as was going into ‘the jungle’ on I’m A Celebrity… I’ve learnt a lot about myself from these challenges and experiences and I like that people see a different side to me now.

The biggest misconception the public have about me is…

That I’m bigger than I am. Everyone expects me to be a 6ft 6 Amazonian giant, but I’m only 5ft 3 and very slight and lean. I’ve seen so many shocked expressions when people meet me for the first time.

If I have time to myself I…

Relax with a good book and a glass of wine. It doesn’t happen too often these days, which is fine, because I’m so grateful for my career resurgence.
