Fern Britton, 54, rose to fame as the host of daytime shows Ready Steady Cook and This Morning. She lives in Buckinghamshire with her husband, TV chef Phil Vickery, and children

Last word jan12When I was a child I wanted to be…

A dolphin trainer, because I love the water! Then I thought I’d like to be a riverboat policewoman, until I heard that you probably had to pull bodies out of the water. Then I had my appendix out when I was 12 and thought, “I know, I’ll be a nurse.”

The worst job I’ve done was…

Being a postman. It wasn’t that
I didn’t like the job, but it was very snowy the week or two I did it and my bicycle kept slipping in the snow and the ice, so I kept falling off and the post would go all over the pavement and the envelopes would be smudged so I couldn’t read the addresses. I was completely useless!

My closest friends would describe me as…

I hope they’d say I’m a good listener, that I’m loyal and that they think I’m funny. They might also think I’m sometimes a bit distant because when I’m working or have a lot on my mind, I sort of drop off the radar. And I’m not very good at long girly telephone calls.

I’m at my best…

At weekends I think, when the kids are all around and I can make a nice big Saturday lunch, which might be a big healthy salad – but their favourite, of course, is burgers, buns and chips!

My secret talent is…

Playing the piano, but only in private – I don’t like other people to listen. I’m also an extremely keen gardener.
